The Barren Island volcano, which erupted in 1991 and 1993 kicking up dark smoke, yellow fumes and boulders 2-3 kilometers into the sky is situated 135 kilometers from Port Blair. The island is very small in size. The recurrent activity and emission of molten lava, gases and hurtling of earth crust along with boulders during the most violent phases, remnants of burnt up tree trunks and broken branches make the island atmosphere dreadful. There is no vegetation near the crater. On the far side of the crater, some vegetation cover that had survived the volcanic eruption is the source of sustenance for the feral goat. They managed to survive the hostile environment by moving to the other side of the volcanic activity and feeding on the succulent tree leaves and seawater. How and when these saline goats made the Barren Island their home is still a mystery. However it is popularly believed that in 1891, a Station steamer from Port Blair left these goats on this island. Some of these goats could withstand the harsh environment and survived. Over a period of time, these goats adapted themselves to the inhospitable conditions, which is a proof of their remarkable adaptive ability and the instinct for survival.
